Happy 2018 from the RETINA Roundup team! We hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season and bringing in the New Year.
Things are back to business as usual this week (except the ‘bomb cyclone’ for us in the East Coast), and I assume most of us are back in clinics and ORs. That being said, we can’t ignore the fact that the mountains throughout the country are snowcapped, and many of us may be heading to the slopes as well.
Retina is known to have some of the best meetings in ophthalmology, many of which we cover in this blog. There is constant innovation in our field, so meetings are packed with exciting presentations, and usually coupled with great destinations.
Here is a list of upcoming ski meetings this year that may be of interest to you, in chronologic order. Please let me know if we missed any. One legendary ski meeting not included here (since it takes place every 3-4 years) is Vail Vitrectomy. History of the meeting can be found here in a nice Retina Today article by Michael Lambert.
22nd American Uveitis Society Winter Symposium
Dates: January 13-15, 2018
Location: Canyons Grand Summit Hotel, Park City, Utah

The annual meeting is co-chaired by Alan Palestine and Albert Vitale. Guest faculty are Ian Crozier, Emmett Cunningham, Michael Postow, and Steve Yeh. The primary topics for this year’s meeting are drug induced uveitis and infectious posterior uveitis.
The meeting homepage indicates: “The AUS is the nation’s leading subspecialty society devoted to ocular inflammatory diseases. The society’s annual winter meeting is a highly interactive scientific meeting that attracts uveitis and retina key opinion leaders and trainees in clinical practice, basic and translational research. The overarching goal of the meeting is to provide a forum for the exchange of new information and ideas that may be relevant to clinical practice and scientific investigation of patients with complex infectious and/or inflammatory ocular diseases.”
37th Squaw Valley Retinal Symposium
Dates: February 1-4, 2018
Location: The Ritz Carlton, Lake Tohoe, California

This annual meeting is hosted by the Retinal Consultants at Sacramento, and the program directors are Robert Wendel and Maurice Landers. This year’s featured guest faculty are Deb Goldstein, Tarek Hassan, Lee Jampol, John Kitchens, and Virgilio Morales-Canton.
The meeting homepage mentions that, “The symposium will feature a full scientific program of presentations and open discussions on a variety of retinal disease management issues and techniques. Many of the top retinal companies will also be demonstrating their latest equipment and developments.”
46th Aspen Retinal Detachment Society Meeting
Dates: March 3 – 7, 2018
Location: Viceroy Snowmass Ski Resort, Aspen, Colorado

Don D’Amico and Tim Murray are the co-chairs of this annual meeting with rich history. Maria Berrocal and Dan Martin will be giving the 2018 named lectures, and other guest faculty this year are Bob Avery, Carl Awh, Tony Capone, David Chow, Charles Eifrig, Harry Flynn, and Carl Regillo.
Here is quote from Dr. Murray regarding the meeting, from the homepage: “There is value in large meetings. But that is a totally different educational experience than having 150 people in a room, comfortable about speaking integratively about a topic, and having someone who is articulate enough as a speaker to moderate and host a discussion like that. That’s the Aspen Retinal Detachment Society.”
Snowmass Retina & Eye
Dates: March 12-16, 2018
Location: Westin Snowmass Resort & Wildwood, Snowmass Village, Colorado

This is a hybrid retina and anterior segment meeting, where March 12-14 features retina content, and March 15-16 comprises of anterior segment, oculoplastics, glaucoma, and neuroophthalmology. The retina keynote speakers this year are Michael Stewart, Michael Ip, Bailey Freund, Carl Regillo, and Lee Jampol. The meeting homepage states that Snowmass Retina & Eye is “the most interactive ophthalmology conference for specialists and comprehensive ophthalmologists.”
1st Telluride Retina Film Festival
Dates: March 16-17, 2018

This is a new meeting organized by Armie Harper, Dave Brown, Virgilio Morales-Canton, and Szilard Kiss. We were able to touch base with Dr. Harper, who indicates that, “Telluride, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful places in North America. It’s a skier’s mountain, but over the last few years, they have really made it quite family friendly. This conference will be different as it features intraocular films, as it dovetails with the Telluride Film Festival tradition. The Telluride Conference Center has state of the art AV and seating.
