Angela Li, MD and Linus Shen, MD
Duke Eye Center, Durham, NC

Dr. Morales-Canton was interviewed by Dr. Jorge A. Fortun, MD. Born in Mexico City, Dr. Morales-Canton grew up with two older sisters and fondly recalled traveling extensively with his family during his early childhood. Ophthalmology clearly runs in the family, as his father was a dedicated glaucoma specialist.

His professional journey in retina began as a medical retina fellow at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI). During the interview, he spoke warmly of his training, expressing deep gratitude for his mentors, particularly Dr. Hugo Quiroz-Mercado. Dr. Morales-Canton shared an inspiring anecdote about learning phacoemulsification from an anterior segment surgeon during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the importance of lifelong learning.

Another vital lesson Dr. Morales-Canton imparts to the next generation is to always remain curious. This relentless curiosity is evident in his vast academic footprint, which spans from radiation therapy to the evolution of modern vitrectomy machines.

His career trajectory is nothing short of remarkable. For over a decade, he has served as Chief at the Asociación Para Evitar la Ceguera en México (APEC), one of the most prestigious and high-volume ophthalmology hospitals in the world. His influence on trainees is immeasurable. Dr. Fortun highlighted this by sharing photos and heartfelt messages from numerous mentees who praised his guidance, professionalism, and warm, approachable attitude. One touching tribute perfectly captured his spirit: “You can be one of the greatest in your field without ever forgetting the importance of walking alongside friends and having a good time while you’re at it.”
